The demise of Hollywood heir Cameron Douglas

NEW YORK (AP) - It was the summer of 2009 as good as Cameron Douglas was strung out upon heroin - again.

Holed up in the trendy Manhattan hotel, the careless heir to Hollywood royalty - son of Michael, grandson of Kirk - was shooting up sometimes six times the day.

His own stabs during stardom had mostly gone nowhere. But notoriety found him when federal agents showed up during his highway residence doorway to expel him in an unwanted role: methamphetamine trafficker.

The 31-year-old's real-life drug play in the Manhattan justice has since laid bare the sum of his downward turn - which friends censure upon the toxic brew of privilege, neglect as good as the family legacy of piece abuse - as good as his loved ones' deep despondency over it.

"I contingency confess which my immediate greeting when I schooled of my son's crime was the single of guilt," his mom Diandra wrote in the single of several letters from supporters asking the federal decider for leniency during the sentencing scheduled for Wednesday.

Said singer Catherine Zeta-Jones, tied together to Michael Douglas: "My stepson is the caring, considerate, worthy tellurian being, though though the disease which he has for years attempted to fight did take over again."

The Drug Enforcement Administration declines to plead the investigation. But justice proceedings, together with Douglas' guilty plea, as good as writings indicate he has since report in hopes of being spared the smallest judgment of 10 years in prison.

Supporters of the son of an Academy Award-winning father who once played the drug potentate in the movie "Traffic" recount the childhood handicapped by his parents' erratic, fast-lane lifestyle. Defense submissions also note the history of piece abuse by his father as good as three uncles. Michael Douglas' publicist pronounced the family wouldn't comment.

Douglas' mom - 12 years younger than his father as good as the daughter of the diplom! at - had the couple's usually child during 22. At the time, she hexed "a striking adolescence about her," wrote family crony Patricia Sullivan-Webb.

Several letters say Cameron Douglas was left in the caring of nannies whilst his father put his behaving career first. His mom became so fanatical about wildlife preservation, she attempted gripping an ocelot in the family's New York unit until it bit Cameron as good as was sent behind to the preserve, Sullivan-Webb said.

Douglas grew up "in the shadow of mythic forebears, as good as the annoyance as good as inspection of the paparazzi," wrote Nancy Hersch Ingram, Diandra's godmother. "He was the really honeyed as good as shy boy. ... That he someway indispensable to be 'somebody' was evident, though who should he be?"

He attempted - as good as unsuccessful - to fit in by playing youth football, wrote childhood crony John Rickard.

"Most of the kids upon the group picked upon Cameron exceedingly because he was Michael Douglas' son," he said. "He just longed for to be treated with colour similar to the normal kid, which never seemed to happen."

By 13, Douglas had been shipped off to boarding propagandize as good as began smoking marijuana. As his parents' matrimony fell apart, he turned to cocaine. A array of rehabs as good as relapses followed.

He after dropped out of propagandize as good as went to New York where, despite his habit, he found the little success as the DJ in clubs. A crony who hired him, Jen Gatien, wrote which he was "an absolute hit" behind the turntables.

He also landed the little movie roles, together with the single in 2003's "It Runs in the Family," starring his father as good as grandfather. (His "unforced description is reduction the mimic of the jerk than something which feels similar to the channeling of his own genuine, though injured humanity," The Washington Post wrote in the review.)

Another hopeful sign: After his relatives divorced, his father picke! d him as many appropriate man when he tied together Zeta-Jones in 2000.

But by 2004, Douglas was hooked upon heroin as good as good upon the trail to self-destruction. Gatien wrote which she had no preference though to mangle off their friendship which year.

"His new 'family,' as he called them, was the group of associate addicts who took over his life," she wrote. "No the single had jobs or responsibilities. ... Cameron was the solitary provider."

Defense lawyers say which after his father unsuccessful in 2006 to persuade Douglas to again get treatment, he cut off his son from the family fortune. That's when, the lawyers say, their client motionless to make ends encounter by traffic meth.

For three years, DEA officials say, Douglas granted over five pounds of meth to New York dealers - the large amount for the city where the drug has mostly the niche market in the happy community as good as upon the bar scene. The city has averaged about 14 pounds in seizures since 2005.

Federal agents, alarmed by an liquid of Mexican-produced meth being smuggled in to California, were questioning suppliers there when DEA cooperators helped put Douglas upon the radar.

A criminal complaint filed last year pronounced which in the single understanding in 2006, an unnamed cooperator shipped money underneath the fake name to Douglas during the California hotel. A few days later, it said, Douglas delivered the bruise of methamphetamine to the cooperator during the Manhattan hotel.

In 2007, another cooperator said, Douglas was paid $48,000 during the Manhattan apartment. The cooperator after received the bruise of clear meth in New York through FedEx from Santa Barbara, Calif., the complaint said.

Douglas' lawyers say he came to New York last summer anticipating to "clean up." He changed in to the oppulance Hotel Gansevoort in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. His drug addict partner Kelly Sott changed with him - the recipe for more trouble.
"He r emphatic joining to Cameron led Kelly to adopt the same drug robe which he had acquired - in her mind their joint drug addiction done tighter their emotional bond," according to justice writings filed upon her behalf.

In Jun as good as July, Douglas met the cooperator to come to terms more deals, initial over dinner, then in conversations secretly recorded upon wiretaps of cell phones as good as the cooperator's highway residence room in Manhattan.

In the single review regulating formula words, investigators pronounced he spoke of "sending out the pastry" to the cooperator, as good as asked, "Did we get the possibility to ... smell any of the salts or anything similar to that?"

Agents arrested Douglas upon Jul 28 during the Gansevoort. He was since residence arrest during his mother's Manhattan apartment, though was thrown in jail after Sott attempted to filch him heroin inside an electric toothbrush - an offense which led to her own guilty defence upon drug charges.

Last month, Sott was sentenced to time served after telling the decider she'd kicked drug whilst behind bars.

Douglas' lawyers have argued which he deserves 3 years in jail during most, as good as he, too, is looking forward to saving himself as good as leading the sober hold up once he's out.

"I have told Cameron to dream the dream which will indeed fill his heart, not what others expect his dream to be," his mom wrote.

But the psychiatrist who has treated with colour Douglas, Robert B. Millman, testified which his highway to liberation will be rocky.

"I hate to say it, though he needs to be rebuilt," he said.
